Pizza Delivery Man brings pie, Customer tries to rob them, pizza man Shoots Customer 2nd time this month

advertisement

A Papa John's pizza delivery man shot and wounded a 17-year-old who called in a pizza order and then robbed him at a vacant house with a fake handgun, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department said.

It was the second time in recent months that a pizza delivery man in Lexington County has shot someone trying to rob him.

Most people think that it is police or fireman that work in an occupation that puts their lives in danger; the most dangerous jobs are ones that deal with the public in the service industry like cab drivers and home delivery food servers who get shot, robbed or killed when they are doing their jobs.

Good for the delivery man for defending himself.

Great job, pizza guy!

I agree with all of the above posters. I used to live in an area where my husband often wore his gun on his hip while doing yard-work (he has a concealed carry permit, and open carry in selected areas was permissible there with a CC permit). This is exactly the kind of deterrent that criminals don't want. They want the average citizen to be afraid of them, and defenseless to boot. I'm glad the driver was able to defend himself. I fear for the safety of ordinary, law-abiding citizens in places where guns have been banned and are therefore only in the hands of criminals.

Crazy pizza man - if the robber had had a real gun he could have got himself killed. Over what? A pizza and pocket change?

You want gun law? That's the mark of a civilised society is it?

You've not understood what I mean. Pizza man decides to be a he man to stop the robber. The robber has a real gun, sees pizza man going for his gun and shoots him.

i will choose to defend myself against petty thugs.

Great way to get yourself killed for nothing, just trying to prove what a tough cowboy you are

that is the whole point of a CHG, you don't know if it's the little old lady with a .44 mag or the pizza guy your threatening to shoot. why should a common citizen be the only one worried about getting shot? in states where you do have conceal and carry laws the criminals now have to play roulette with whom they victimize.

That bit possibly works as a deterrent.

But once the deterrent has failed, do you then actually engage in a gunfight? Over a pizza and small change?

Unless you are into Russian Roulette you hand over the money, get out and call the cops.

Having delivered and managed for Domino's I have to say that there is a reason for the delivery person not resisting a robbery; it is for his protection as well as that of the other delivery drivers. A driver should never carry more money than it would take to provide change for a $20 bill. I would imagine that that would be about $10 nowadays (never more than $20). It isn't worth getting killed for 10 bucks. Having been robbed several times myself I have to say that if this robber had had a real gun, the the driver would probably be dead at this point. When the robber is pointing a gun at you (they certainly aren't pointing it at the ground), trying to do a quick draw to shoot him first is ludicrous. If a driver resists, then the next time this robber (or any other who hears about this) decides to rob a delivery driver - they will simply shoot or otherwise incapacitate the driver before he ever has a chance to resist. So now you have drivers being attacked and injured over $10. This driver may have gotten away with it; but what about his fellow drivers? Limiting the cash a driver carries is the most effective deterrent to robberies - most robbers aren't going to want to go through the hassle and chance of years in jail over $10. Conversely, the biggest danger to drivers is if even one driver is robbed with a lot of money.

That being said - I laughed my as* off at this.

The pizza man quite probably would have been shot had the robber had a real gun whether or not he carried a weapon. Thank goodness he did have a weapon in order to protect himself.

Hey Idiot, pizza man did not get a pizza delivery job to patrol the streets fighting crime and being a he man- this poor guy was just trying to make a living when some thug decideed to rob him, pizza just decided he did not want to be a victim. Good for him! These thugs that prey on other deserve to be shot, to bad he didn't shoot better then there would be one less thug to victimize other in your so called "civilized" society. Or maybe you think counselling and intervention would help in these situations.

There is always the chance of being killed on a delivery (drivers are very aware of this). And robberies occur even in the best of areas. Two of the robberies that happened to me involved guns in plain sight; as opposed to the robber claiming that they had a gun (also several involving knives, and in one a club). In one robbery I had a gun held to my head; and in the other, a gun pointed at my chest;. The main thing on the mind of most of these robbers is to get the money and get it over with as quickly as possible; getting it over with quickly should also be the goal of the driver. The less time spent in the confrontation, the less likely it is that the driver will be hurt. The only times that I really doubted that I was going to make it out of a situation alive, was when I once became obstinate about giving over my wallet - it had no money or credit cards, I just didn't like the idea of having to replace my drivers license for the third time. The robber in that instance didn't even have a round chambered until I became obstinate. The time I felt the most danger though was after a Pizza Hut driver had been robbed of over $100; the guys who robbed me didn't believe that I only had $20 (that resulted in my only injuries - being hit in the head with a crowbar, and pistol whipped).

There is a definite danger to delivery drivers though. There were several beatings of my drivers (when I was a manager); usually after someone had been robbed of a lot of money (my drivers never carried over $20 - they knew that I would fire them if they did). And of course there is always the chance that the robber gets scared or the gun goes off accidentally - they too are usually very nervous or hyper (the younger the robber the more chance of being injured); and any quick morvement (such as drawing a gun) could cause them to shoot reflexively. When I was hit with a crowbar it was by a boy that looked to be no more than 10 or 12yo (which is probably why I only required about 5 stitches); his older partner was the one with a gun to my head. And of course there are always the psycho's. One delivery driver death that I remember happened after the driver had already given the robber's his money; they forced him into the back of a pickup, drove him to a bridge (about 20 stories high); then they threw him off of the bridge and shot him with a shotgun on the way down. He left behind a young wife and a newborn child.

Over the 8 years that I worked for Domino's I only remember two deaths in the areas I worked (could be they are the only ones that stand out in my memory at the moment); the one stated above and another where the driver - running back to his truck after a delivery - surprised a group of guys who shot him in a reflex action (no robbery) - this happened in a very good neighborhood. Neither of the deaths could have been prevented by the driver having had a handgun. I do have to hand it to the Investigators at Domino's. There had never been a death in that region where the killers were not caught and convicted.

Sometimes when you go on a delivery you simply know that things aren't right. I have made deliveries knowing without a doubt in my mind that it was a setup, on the off chance that I could be wrong. As a manager, I have put areas off-limits, refusing to take orders from that area; and if an order was suspect, I of course called the customer back to verify (refusing to send the driver out if no one answered). But I have never heard of a driver that refused to make a delivery, because he thought it was too dangerous. I really respect the drivers who deliver in dangerous neighborhoods; especially the drivers in one area of Tulsa - the only store I had ever seen with bullet proof glass seperating the customer walk-in area from the store.

So remember the dangers that face the people who deliver your food, and tip them accordingly - it is the tips that make up the bulk of their income.

Azrancher - I am not against defending yourself - I cheered for the guy in a Dallas suburb who took his rifle and shot the guys who broke into his home - he dropped them one by one as they ran down the street. When someone tried to rob my manager as he took the money to the bank (we went in pairs), I chased him all the way across the parking lot in my car - too bad it was in reverse. I would have run him over without hesitation, and smiled at the bump as I did so (Damn Bonneville just wasn't fast enough). We spent several hours trying to track him down after he disappeared in a residential neighborhood.

But I don't agree with delivery guys carrying weapons. It's easy for you to sit back and say "Good for him!" You're not the one out there on the street that has to deal with the consequences of his action; nor are you the one who has to worry about your guys getting shot as a result of what he's done. Something like this hits the news and it makes the crooks neverous. It doesn't stop all of the robberies from happening - the robbers are just more likely to shoot at the drop of a hat. The $10 bucks that the driver forks over in a robbery isn't even his money! Why should a guy get shot for 10 bucks that doesn't even belong to him? The money belongs to the company - and the company want's the driver to give it up as quickly as possible - no hesitation - no resistance.

Hey Rick, In a perfect world this may fly and I do understand the philosophy behind it.. But the morons and rocket scientists who perpetuate these robberies are not exactly the smartes our society produces. When the pizza man arrives and gets held up it does not matter if he's holding only $10 or $1000, its still a felony robbery at that point and this they know. Often the lack of cash will enrage these thugs to incite more violence or prevent witness testimony later. Just refuse to be a victim at all and Shoot the bastards and rid the world of the vermin. They used to tell women years ago not to resist their attackers when raped so as to prevent more violence against them....You see that went out the window to.

REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM, SHOOT BACK!!!

When I was a young policeman in L.A. we used to work "anti robbery"squads. One of the details were directed at robberies of pizza men. We would dress as delivery men glue two pizza boxes on top of each other and cut a hole in the bottoms to conceal your handgun so it looked like you where just holding pizzas but in fact where holding and aiming a .45. We would park in known bad housing area's and projects to just walk around like we were looking for an address/apt#, with a back up team trailing behind and when some dirtbags saw this and came out to rob "the pizza man" it was a shocker when it turned into OK corral. After working an area for awhile and shooting several thugs they would run faster from a Dominoes car than a police cruiser, HAHAHA. But thats all these idiots understand, a bullet in the ass.

Azrancher - I understand where you're coming from. Tulsa would send out the same robbery squad everytime we had a robbery. Tulsa's squad must not have been as good; because not once did they ever have any luck (In the two years that I was there).

This is not just an unproven philosophy - I believe whole-heartedly that it works. I have no idea the total number of times that I have been robbed. All the robberies that happened to me involved more than one person; in most one guy would simply have his hand in his pocket and say that he had gun. I only remember one robbery where the guys actually looked into the pouch that we carried our money in to see how much I had - most just took the pouch and ran. I did this for 8 years. I have delivered pizzas in every corporate store in Dallas and several of the franchises. I have also delivered pizzas in Kileen, Texas; Wichita Falls, Texas; and 3 stores in Tulsa. I have delivered pizzas in rich neighborhoods and the projects. In all of these places, this philosophy has worked except for that one robbery.

As far as self defense goes, I'm all for it. But I will never change my mind about this - unless you provide every driver with a weapon and the training to use it.

I agree with you that the crooks aren't the brightest banana's in the bunch. I would laugh whenever the robbers would run off with the pouch when I knew that the only thing in it were some coins or a couple of bucks.

Unless of course they decided to shoot first and just take the money off of the corpse. I'm not saying that I'm against this for the average guy - I'm not. Simply saying that as a delivery guy, I would much rather give up the $10 of someone else's money - let the guy run off - call the cops and give my description; you can't give a description if you're in a body bag. As a manager, there is enough worry about your guys getting hurt as it is without worrying about them ending up in the morgue.

And this doesn't even get into the fact of the liability this guy and the company would face if an errant bullet hit someone else - or the possible criminal charges.
